CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

The parking lot stood full of cars from the upper echelons of Gordon’s Bay and an assault of nerves hit as she pulled into an empty bay. This wasn’t one of her mom’s soirees, and if they didn’t like her singing, she wouldn’t have a job.

Vivid memories flooded her mind as she sat in the car, hands resting on the steering wheel. She could still hear Hans’s voice telling her to get bigger breasts and short, peroxided hair. The sound of his words assaulted her ears as she tried to push them away.

The dress she wore that night clung to her skin, the fabric soft against her flesh. She could feel the weight of the memory on her chest, making it hard to breathe. Her eyes scanned the surroundings, taking in every detail. The lights of the yachts in the harbour illuminated the dark corners of her mind. Her emotions swayed like a pendulum; anger and hurt battling for dominance. She thought of the pieces of herself she had given Hans in trust and how low she was prepared to sink to please him. The taste of bile rose in her throat as she remembered giving up on her own aspirations and identity for a kick in the teeth.

Damn Hans. It was never about the dress. She did not attract him, no matter what she wore, and the little black number deserved a fresh memory. He had taken enough from her, and she wouldn’t give him the power to steal more of her life from the grave. None of this mattered. He was dead. Except, she couldn’t fool herself, as his rejection and betrayal still stung like a wasp.

She stepped out of the car and slammed the door shut; the sound echoing in the quiet parking area of the harbour. The smell of exhaust fumes mixed with the salty sea air filled her nostrils. Her heart raced as she took determined strides towards the restaurant, the sound of her heels clicking against the asphalt. The barman paused mid-pour and stared at her with unapologetic interest as she approached Peter. A swarm of nervous butterflies danced in her stomach, making her feel queasy and light-headed.

‘You look beautiful tonight,’ Peter said. ‘Are you ready to do this?’

She wasn’t, but that wouldn’t land her the job. Instead, she smiled and inhaled through her nose. ‘I am,’ she said.

‘Come, let me go introduce you to Olive. I told her about your audition tonight.’

They stepped into the dining area with soft music playing in the background. The white tablecloths looked crisp against the plush burgundy carpets. People laughed and chatted around tables with beautiful rose centrepieces. In the dim light candles flickered, creating a romantic ambience. The warm glow from the candles illuminated a young couple as they gazed intently at each other. She felt a lump form in her throat and swallowed hard, suddenly overwhelmed by the intensity of the moment. The way he looked at his companion, with such deep affection and admiration, was something she had never experienced before.
